When I saw the prices asked for those small portable 6x4 photo printers, I must admit that the idea of buying one flew right out of my head. Around £100 or more seems very expensive for a printer with very little versatility.
Anyway, I did stumbled on a reconditioned Canon Pixma mini 260 a few weeks ago at almost a give away price. It needed a new cartridge (its an inkjet printer), but even so it was still around 1/3 the price of when it was new, and in as new condition. So I took the plunge and also bought a new cartridge, which was a little hard to find I must admit.
I have printed around 60 prints from it so far, and there is still plenty of ink left, but what surprised me was the speed and quality of the finished prints. In less than a minute a 6x4 print, at good lab quality, is ejected from the printer!
OK, it is more expensive than those macines in the supermakets etc, but not that much more. But it is conveneint.
Worth £100 plus new? Not on your life! Maybe thats why they have faded away from the shop shelves recently. But find a used/recon model cheap and it's worth considering just for the convenience. Oh and one observation. They are much cheaper to use and give better results than a run of the mill A4 3 in one printer that, when used to print even 6x4 prints, would send you to debtor prision with the amount of over-priced ink they use.
P.S. The Pixma mini 260 is an inkjet. Other makes and models may used other methods for printing photos. So its worth checking out the price and availability of the consumable supplies before you buy, whether new or previously owned.
