If I had to award a prize for the biggest waste of human endeavour, it would go to bottle water. God! the species is so vulnerable to advertising, I sometime wonder how we ever got out of the trees.
What is so wrong with water from the tap? It is chemically and biologically safe. In fact it has proved to be safer than the bottled variety. Remember Perrier water? Bottled water has become the fashion accessory of the millenium (check an office desk near you),generating mountains of plastic bottles along the way.Then there is distribution. How much CO2 does that generate compared to the pipework under every street?
A massive industry has grown around collecting, bottling, distributing and marketing these products, yet people moan about their water bills. The water from the tap is used for far more than drinking. Cooking, cleaning, washing, watering the garden, flushing th loo.......The list goes on.
This year, sales of bottled water have fallen for the first time in years. Maybe there is some common sense out there after all.
